A Very Speedy Pop Up Knitwear Studio Shoot

Lyndsey Currie in her temporary textiles studio

A challenge

I’ve been photographing Lyndsey Currie’s gorgeous knitwear for years. Her range of bold and colourful textiles are inspired by her love of brutalist architecture and are all made in Dundee, on a hand powered knit machine. Lyndsey works from home in a space that she doesn’t feel reflects her brand aesthetic, so felt held back from planning a brand storytelling shoot. There are lots of aspects to running her textile brand, so with restricted space in her flat for getting in around the knitting equipment there would have been logistical issues too.

I suggested we booked a location where we could set up a dream knitwear studio for the shoot and that’s exactly what we did. The Wasps Meadowmill Project space is available for external hire for a half or full day. With its concrete floors, big light windows and blank walls it made an ideal backdrop for Lyndseys’ colourful knitted accessories.

Time Constraints

For various reasons we could only manage a 4 hour booking, so we had to be very organised to pull this off! We made a Pinterest Board and talked through all the ‘actions’ we wanted to capture meaning we had a very comprehensive shot list that helped us design the studio set. We made lists of everything we needed to bring and had reference images on hand to keep us right.

The Result

Once set up, we had a purpose built ‘working’ studio to photograph all of the aspects of Lyndsey’s business in a seamless way. The photoshoot went incredibly smooth thanks to all of our planning and we were able to move from one action to the next fluidly because everything was put together with that intention. From designing, knitting, linking, ironing, sewing and packing to fun portraits.

half studio, half set design

Once we were all packed up, we nipped outside for a few extra portraits with Lyndsey wearing her knitwear. There was some lovely concrete walls and a shipping container that made fab backdrops so that was a bonus!
