Client Catch Up: Holly McAfee

Holly McAfee at Slessor Gardens

I’ve been photographing products and people for over 6 years now, so I think it’s about time I introduce you to some of my lovely clients. These client catch ups will give you a little insight into the people behind the small businesses which I work with. Today that’s Holly McAfee - I’ve been photographing her beautiful jewellery for years, and more recently had the privilege of visiting her studio for a personal brand shoot. I absolutely love nosying around workspaces and seeing how things are made so it was a treat to watch (and document) Holly’s making process.

We’ve developed a moody luxe style for Holly’s product photography. I have a small bank of props which make a regular appearance - a dark concrete coaster, charcoal grey wooden background, and muted rainbow hand-dyed fabric - with the addition of seasonal and dried flowers. These dark backgrounds and subtle lighting really let the metals shine.

Tell me a little bit about your business?

I'm Holly McAfee, a jeweller based in the centre of sunny Dundee. I make contemporary fine jewellery in recycled precious metals, for lovers of nature and ethical design. Each piece is formed by layering lots of handmade, tiny textured petals to create delicately sculptural designs. Alongside my latest collection, I also make wedding rings and bespoke pieces for special occasions.

Tea or coffee?

Coffee, with oat milk please!

What made you decide to invest in photography?

I have a lack of skill when it comes to photography, and a lack of time to learn! I knew I couldn't showcase my work in the way I wanted to, so decided to ask a professional to take it off my plate.

What's your most loved piece right now?

This changes often depending on what I'm enjoying making or wearing, but right now I'm loving delicate chain bracelets with a bit of detail. So my 'Flow' bracelet, featuring a dainty bar of layered, textured gold petals, is my current favourite!

Shout out a small business who inspires you!

Can I shout out three? My studio pals at Double Door Studios - Islay Spalding, Christina Vernon and Ieva Jankovksa - all keep me inspired to continue designing, making and developing my practice. We work together to hold exhibitions and events throughout the year, and it's always fun going to the studio!

Do you have a favourite photograph I've taken?

Much like my favourite pieces, this changes every time I receive a new batch! My current favourite is from our recent brand shoot - I think it perfectly captures the calm and creative feeling of being at my bench.

What part of your business brings you the most joy?

The parts I never get to see! My part is done once I've handed the perfect piece over to my client, but knowing someone's about to open a gift that's been chosen just for them, or that a wedding band will be worn and cherished for many years is something really special.

Thanks Holly! That must be really special, I love the idea of spotting someone out in the wild wearing their Holly McAfee wedding band.
